Yes, there is disc golf in Wyoming. Ask most competitive discers what Wyoming and disc golf have in common and they’ll say hmmm, doesn’t Peter Shive live there? He does. But thanks to Jack Faubion, Gillette is now the place to go for Wyoming disc golf.
It’s a town of nearly 20 thousand. The Gillette Convention and Visitor’s Bureau touts nearby Devil’s Tower and the Big Horn Mountains as local attractions. Gillette is also well-known for it’s coal, methane and oil resources–it’s the largest coal producer in the nation. I’m talking about an industry worth billions of dollars. Take a look at the dragline known as Ursa Major. It’s used to scoop up all that coal and is one of the largest of its kind in the world–you can fit a 1,500 sq. ft. house in the bucket!
Last year, the Energy Rotary Club forked over the cash for baskets and tee pads, the Campbell County Parks and Rec Department opened up their Camplex park, and the Energy Rotary Disc Golf Course became a reality–it was completed 3 weeks before the grand opening event. Jack contacted Mile High to promote the Energy Rotary Club of Gillette Grand Opening. He was organized. He garnered several local sponsors, put the finishing touches on a new course and almost single-handedly made Gillette attractive to regional disc golfers. The first PDGA sanctioned event in Wyoming was a big success, and for many out-of-towners, was well worth the drive (See the Colorado crew).
A new year brings new goals. Jack and the Poor Boys Disc Golf Club are hosting the PDGA Region 7 Championships and the Energy Rotary event later in the season. There’s already a serious buzz going for the Region 7 Championships, June 18-19. Jack has enlisted Pepsi as the title sponsor and they are kickin’ in $2000 added cash. The local Tower West Best Western is contributing cash, offering lodging discounts to players and is tournament central–happy hour drinks, $9.99 dinner buffet, flymart and horseshoes are offered Saturday night. The event is a sanctioned B-Tier–all players must be current PDGA members or pay temp fees–and is a USADGC (Am Nationals) qualifier.
To make room for a larger field–and a bigger course–the Poor Boys have added 4 new holes and 5 pin placements to accommodate a field up to 110 players. Region 7 Championships starts with practice and random draw doubles Friday. Saturday there will be two rounds of 22 holes. Sunday will finish up with one round of 22 and final 9 for pro divisions. Awards will follow onsite.
Don’t miss this event, Jack is sure to put on a good show.
